This last week produced some great days to be on the chukar mountains. Mostly temperatures getting to the mid 30’s with sun shining. Without much wind it makes hiking the chukar country quite warm. But it’s this time of the year that I feel especially lucky to live close to chukar country. I can pick and choose hunting days and stay home on those days when the storms come through. Those who travel thousands of miles to hunt chukars this time of the year don’t have that luxury. That’s probably why we see less hunters this time of the year.
On my last four trips, I only saw one other chukar hunter and that’s only because Greg and I went hunting together. After the four hour drive we never saw each other again until we returned to the truck. I only heard him shoot one time even though he said he did a lot of shooting at chukars. You just can’t beat days like that to be on a mountain.
My only complaint this time of the year is the medussa grass. It lays flat over the rocks and with a skiff of snow helping to cover those same rocks, I did a lot more stumbling than I like. Oh, what a tuff life I have.
It’s the time of the year that birds are pretty flighty but even with that I’d say 50% of the birds hold within gun range.

And to the dog’s amazement, I’m shooting a little better once again.

Another plus to this year is the amount of huns we are finding. They are really testing the range of my over and under but even they hit the ground once in a while.

I know a lot of chukar hunters wish I wouldn’t type about how good it is out there right now but I don’t believe it makes a difference. The hard chukar hunters are out there no matter what and those that just consider chukar hunting as something to do aren’t going to be out there slipping and sliding on those treacherous sidehills. It’s just a great time to be out there and watching your dogs do there thing.

And then proudly show off your prize when you shoot well.

Who knows. You might even bring enough home for a good meal.

Good luck finding some fun shooting in the next forty days or so.
