I don’t like posting negative things that might keep others off the Chukar Mountains, but the cover is extremely high this year. That’s great for the hunting season, once the seeds have fallen. If we don’t have bad fires, the birds will have plenty of cover to hide in. But as the cheat dries, asContinue reading “Cheat grass and other fox tails”

Babies
I wish I could say we found some baby chukars, but I haven’t seen any yet. But yesterday, Conner and I took a drive and a hike and saw some baby turkeys, big enough to fly up into the tree. We also had a female Ryff grouse trying to lead us away from a certainContinue reading “Babies”
Beware
As you can see, things are drying out fast. These things are ready to grab onto anything they can and then work their way deeper. Especially in between the toes and in the ears. Check your dog regularly or prepare for some expensive visits to the vets. It’s going to be a very bad yearContinue reading “Beware”
Snake Avoidance
If you are a chukar hunter and you like to get out when the season opens, you are aware of the chance of running into snakes. And once in a while, they may be rattlers. They are out and about now, and it’s a good time to consider snake avoidance. Now might be the timeContinue reading “Snake Avoidance”
Collar
Memorial weekend, and I’m staying closer to home and away from the crowds. I know this next video is common sense and probably boring to most, but I often get the question on how I train my dog or what book I train from. Over thirty years ago, I had all the gadgets to trainContinue reading “Collar”
Cover
Like I said, I never get tired of being out there. Just a quick video of some of the country we were in today. Wow! What heavy cover. It also means the cheat is taller, and we’ll be cleaning the dog’s ears more as the cheat cures. Just a short video of some of theContinue reading “Cover”
I love this stuff
This is all kind of redundant, but there is nothing I enjoy better than being in chukar country with my dogs. We don’t have to find chukars to enjoy the outings. There’s always something to learn, and I can’t think of a better way for me and the dogs to stay in condition. We veryContinue reading “I love this stuff”
Cover and hoppers
Took Grady and Layne into some chukar country today. The cover is great, and little grasshoppers all over the place. Short video of Layne running through the cover on the northern slopes. The final part of the video is the north slope and Layne bugging Grady. Quite a difference between the north and south slopes.Continue reading “Cover and hoppers”
Drying again
We’re back to being worried about this fickle weather. Barb, the dogs, and I went up north to Dworshak reservoir for an 11-day camping and chasing turkey trip. Everything was green, but we didn’t see any moisture the whole time. On the way home, the closer we got to chukar country, the drier it became.Continue reading “Drying again”
They live on forever in our hearts
I had a friend lose his setter this week. Alan gave Gracie ten great years in the field. And she was a good one. My heart goes out to him. It’s so hard to lose our dogs after so many years of devotion to us. I’m sure she will be with Alan forever. Today, IContinue reading “They live on forever in our hearts”
