Puppy fun

The wing on the string isn’t a training method, but more of getting a good look at the puppy’s instinct. I never used it on Jake and Grady, but I’m glad I did it with Layne today. It will be fun looking back in the future at her at 59 days old. I believe she’s got the instincts.

Training is so much simpler at this stage of my life. Being retired, I’m with my dogs constantly. I have a lot more time to introduce them to the outdoors and be more consistent with my yard and house training. She is already housebroken and whines at the back door for potty breaks. Barb’s been really happy about that. Layne comes to command 90% of the time. The other ten percent will be easy to correct when the time comes. I’m going to teach her to sit. Something I’ve never done with any of my other dogs, but I’m trying to decide at what point to do that. Before I train to whoa or after. Any suggestions?

We’ll be back on the mountain on these beautiful days, and I might do the wing on the string one more time just because it’s fun. I didn’t show this on the videos, but when Layne couldn’t see the wing, she was sniffing the ground for it. I guess there is some training in that. But all of the points are by site. One more short video of Layne pointing the wing. I hope the rest of you are enjoying the outdoors as much as I am. And don’t forget taking the mutt along for some of that enjoyment.

Hunting has been a favorite past time for me for 55 years but the last twenty five years I have been consumed by chukar hunting and more specifically chukar hunting with fantastic dogs. In this blog I hope to pass on any information I can about chukar hunting but more than anything I want to showcase what will probably be my last two chukar dogs, Jake and Grady. I am 70 years old, Jake is 8 and Grady is 3 and I'm hoping to stay on the chukar mountain until I am 80 when Grady will be fetching my final chukars.
