It’s amazing how quickly things can change. The Spring rains have come, and the hills are turning lush green. The animals are loving it and getting all that nutrition out of the grass for the babies to be born in a month or so. Grady, Layne, and I took a hike on one of our favorite chukar mountains a couple of days ago, and the grass had doubled in height in a week.
A few weeks ago, I was thinking cover might be hard to find this fall, but it looks like Mother Nature has come to our aid. Things are coming together just the way she planned. Our first baby geese arrived, and the Wood ducks and Cinnamon teal that nest here every year have started preparing their nests.

We’ve had a couple of bear sightings already, and I’m sure they’re loving this green grass to help clean their guts out after the long sleep they had.

And there’s a hunting season about to begin. Turkeys. From what the dogs and I are seeing, it should be a great year to call in a gobler. The youth season began a few days back. Conner, his girlfriend Amaia, and I took Amaia’s 10-year-old sister out on her first turkey hunt. It was epic. Conner called in two Toms that put on a great show before Taytam dropped a long beard with a 28 gauge. It was a perfect show, and Conner got it all on video.

I’m a lucky guy that these young ones invite me along on these fun trips.

Meanwhile, Grady and I are busy teaching Layne about upland birds. She got to see her first blue grouse flush from Grady’s point and acted a little excited about the sound of flushing wings. Or maybe it was just me being excited.
It’s a great time to be out walking the Idaho mountains and high deserts.
