No more doom and gloom

It’s been a different season for me and the boys this year. The heat, dryness and skittish birds have made for a slow start. It’s not that we haven’t seen plenty of birds but good points and bird cooperation has been few and far between. The many miles and different locations always produced similar resultsContinue reading “No more doom and gloom”

Looking for contacts

Okay, all you chukar hunters, bare with me on this one. I’m looking to find some available chukar hunters to save my butt. I’ve recently noticed that I am losing my mind. I need some people to put on my contact list for my SPOT device. For those who aren’t familiar with SPOT, it’s aContinue reading “Looking for contacts”

Not always chukar

Barb and I were awoken this morning by this alarm clock. Every once in a while they come down behind our house and treat us to some great sounds. I finally got smart and turned the camera on even though it was too dark for filming. One morning one of the bulls was ten yardsContinue reading “Not always chukar”

Putting on the miles

I had another so so day on the hill Friday. It was a little warmer than I liked but the boys insisted on getting back on the mountain so we went. I hunted a new place for the year but an area that I have had success in the past. Since I’ve been seeing mostContinue reading “Putting on the miles”

Oregon

To be honest from the start, this was the worst opener in Oregon I’ve ever had. We’d be going pretty hungry if we had to survive on my take. But it wasn’t for lack of birds. It took a lot of leg work to find them, but they were there. Day one was our bestContinue reading “Oregon”

Righting the ship

Over the last week it’s become obvious to me that I have a different outlook on what a bad year, average year and good year of chukar hunting looks like. From some of the texts I’ve got as well as the lack of success pictures on other blogs and negative outings posted on them, I’veContinue reading “Righting the ship”

Two week review

16 days already over on the Idaho chukar season and there are lots of mixed views on bird numbers out there. I have to admit that most of what I am hearing is negative. Some saying bird numbers are down 40 to 50 percent from normal. I don’t buy that and can only go byContinue reading “Two week review”

Cattle and game trails.

The big guy took Grady and I on a chukar hunt today. He said it was going to be a good one because the rain had recently stopped and he could see snow high on the mountain above. Grady and I knew that was good news for scenting conditions. I hadn’t been on this hillContinue reading “Cattle and game trails.”

Keeping it fun

Back in the 70’s I became an archery fanatic. Man, I was going to kill at least one of everything and have some fantastic heads mounted. It all started out well and I got some pretty nice animals. I lived especially for elk season and scouted year long, shot 300 arrows a day, and livedContinue reading “Keeping it fun”

Thistles and sunflowers

The Chukar season in Idaho has officially begun. As mentioned before, Barb and I camped at a spot we usually hunt later in the season hoping for birds galore. There were plenty of birds but not a covey at every likely spot as I had anticipated. Our trip began two days before the season andContinue reading “Thistles and sunflowers”
