I never hear it mentioned, but I’m wondering if dogs suffer from dementia as well as humans. The dogs and I took a jaunt in some Hungarian country yesterday and Jake’s actions brought to mind that question. This year Jake slowed some, but you could always tell when he was on birds. His point wasContinue reading “Dementia”

The best of 2022
I had an abbreviated season this year with only 44 chukar hunts. Most would relish at that. It was still a wonderful season with great numbers of birds. The dogs did wonderful and for the most part my shooting was above par. I did a lot of hobbling along towards the end of the seasonContinue reading “The best of 2022”
Fun week
Nothing fun to talk about as far as chukar hunting except that those guys in Nevada and Utah are still hunting for about a week more. I’m already bored as hell so I decided to post this ridiculous post about the state of my health and a little bit about Hungarian partridge. I made itContinue reading “Fun week”
Just interested
Like most of you, I love chukar hunting. I am no better of a chukar hunter than anyone else and although I believe my dogs are the best chukar dogs out there (the reigning chukar champs), they are really no better than most other chukar dogs. I am by no means an expert on chukarContinue reading “Just interested”
Hard to quit
By now you know that next to family, dogs and chukars are a huge part of my life. This morning I started preparing for recovery days. I went to a spot I know holds Hungarian partridge and let the boys run as I walked the road. There was no gun. The boys didn’t let meContinue reading “Hard to quit”
2022 season finale
The chukar season came to an end for Jake, Grady and myself. Although there are five days left to be able to hunt, I chose the perfect day for an ending. It was a perfect blue bird day with a temperature of 46 degrees. Right now it is snowing outside and colder temperatures are returningContinue reading “2022 season finale”
Inevitable
Well, the chukar season is coming to a close. Although it’s been a very good season with good numbers of birds, it wasn’t one of my best years. I’m hoping to get one more hunt in the next few days and I’ll post to let you know how I feel the hunting season should haveContinue reading “Inevitable”
Throw the penalty flag
Anybody that has hunted chukars for very many years knows how frustrating the last month of the season can be. This year, with the abundance of birds, it seems like it’s even more frustrating than ever for me. If you watch much football you might see the yellow flag thrown for taunting. Well, if thereContinue reading “Throw the penalty flag”
Pay attention here
Back in 2010 I wrote a blog on conditioning for chukar hunters, as suggested by a reader. I was 59 years old and was able to cover the mountain pretty well. Since then, I have gone through a lot of surgeries and have not aged quite as gracefully as I hoped. A left knee replacement,Continue reading “Pay attention here”
Cabin fever
I read an article this morning about cabin fever. Of course, it was associated with the winter months and being stuck inside. The only time I get any hint of cabin fever is in the hot summer time. When it is too hot to get our and hike the hills. Luckily, there is always aContinue reading “Cabin fever”
