I have been on an elk hunt with my grandson. He drew a great bull tag down in the Owyhees and I’ve packed up all my old elk hunting stuff and am going to be helping him for the month. It’s an archery tag and the country is going to be tough hunting unless IContinue reading “For the love of dogs”

Sorry
I tried to get out on one more scouting trip but after taking the long drive the sun was beating down on the area I wanted to walk. I decided it would be best for both me and the dog to not even get started hiking. There were two positives on the trip. First, IContinue reading “Sorry”
All kinds of fun stuff
Some of you might remember this, but for those that don’t, I gave a couple of talks on chukar hunting at Boise State University a few years back. The class was doing research on chukars and I mean they broke every little detail down on the birds. From what they ate to leg mass ofContinue reading “All kinds of fun stuff”
Conditioning
Lately it seems like each day has a new surprise for me. Barb, the dogs and I took a camping trip to Stanley, Idaho last week. More than anything else, we just wanted to get away from the heat and figured at 7200 feet of elevation and up we could find some cooler air. WeContinue reading “Conditioning”
Different tracks
My grandson showed me how to use my t.v. and watch you tube video’s this weekend. I’m sure everyone in the world knew how to do that but me. I soon learned that I could watch others chukar hunt and immediately became a critic. But before I show how smart I am, I’ll pass onContinue reading “Different tracks”
And then there were chukars
What a great scouting trip I had this morning. I got up early and headed to an area I had scouted about a month ago with no luck. I saw plenty of tracks on that last trip but no birds. This time the chukars obliged me. I had an ablation on some nerves in myContinue reading “And then there were chukars”
Very positive report.
I got a note from a good friend and fellow chukar hunter this morning. Greg Munther is a no b.s. type guy so I take his observations very serious. He floated the Snake from Hell’s canyon and reported very positive numbers of chukars. He said the majority of them were half grown. Also he saidContinue reading “Very positive report.”
Back again and not good
I went back out yesterday to a pretty good chukar spot and was very disappointed. Because of the heat, the dogs and I got out super early to cover some good chukar country. The short story is we never saw a chukar. As expected, the cover was very heavy with grasshoppers and other bugs everywhere.Continue reading “Back again and not good”
July’s hot report
That’s about all I got to report, it’s hot out there. First I’ll give you Mark’s report before I tell you my findings today. Mark said he found five different covey’s of chukar with an average of 9 chicks per covey. Great report and he also said there were plenty of springs as well asContinue reading “July’s hot report”
Positive thinking
Once again I took a short drive this morning. I wasn’t on a scouting mission but going up to check on a creek that feeds my pond. Most of the property is private but findings on them can sometimes tell us what we might find on public land. Especially hatching conditions. My sightings weren’t overlyContinue reading “Positive thinking”
