Nothing new from me as far as pictures go, but some decent reports from a couple of other readers of seeing babies. I did see a covey of baby quail this morning that were only a few days old. For some reason, the quail around my place are very late and this wasn’t real unusualContinue reading “Hot”

Good news Bad news
Bad news first. Barb gave me a call while heading towards the Portland area to watch a baseball tourney my grandson, Mac, is playing in. She said there is a fire between Lime and Huntington. It didn’t look like it had got over the hill closer to the reservoir yet but it confirms my fearContinue reading “Good news Bad news”
DRY
I wish I had more to say, but since my last post the weather turned unusually hot. The chukar hills turned from a green color to dry in a short time. I took a few hikes early in the mornings in mid June but came up with no sightings of chukars. But there were plentyContinue reading “DRY”
June update
One word. Fantastic. All the chukar hills are full of green heavy cover, Just last night a good cover of rain fall fell over sothwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon, keeping cover green for at least two more weeks. On top of that, the dogs, Barb and I took a hike and saw all kinds ofContinue reading “June update”
Update
Once again, this Spring is turning out to be good for the upland birds. A few rainy days between now and mid June would help to keep things green and the insect population heavy. Speaking of insects, Barb and I spent a few days over in western Idaho and there were grasshoppers everywhere. Good sign.Continue reading “Update”
Grass not growing under our boots
Things are still going great. Shoulder operation is scheduled for June 20 and we’re doing our best trying to get it moved up. That’s putting recoup time real close to the 1st of October. That being said, we’re still staying active and on the mountain. Surprisingly we’re still seeing more pairs of birds than usualContinue reading “Grass not growing under our boots”
Getting warm
Along with the warmer weather comes the dangers of running dogs. We’ve been fortunate in not finding many ticks this year. Also there is plenty of water for the dogs, so we don’t have to pack to much to keep the canine partners from over heating. I’ve also heard a few tales of seeing snakes,Continue reading “Getting warm”
the season begins
Well, maybe not hunting season, but the beginnings of what makes or breaks our upcoming seasons. Our first canada goslings have shown up. The pictures aren’t the best since I’m taking them from the house in between squalls. Only 3 and about a week earlier then on past years but I’m sure there will beContinue reading “the season begins”
Different type of chuck
Today, while the dogs and I were hiking, we found evidence of probable avian predation. The kind of predation that might help some of our chukar species. We found this jaw bone on a rock outcropping. I assumed that this bone came from a rock chuck. If the predators stay after these critters, their stomach’sContinue reading “Different type of chuck”
Ruff
Jake’s barking and some crawling got me into the brush where Jake had tree’d his quarry.
