Only fifty days to the chukar, hun and quail opener in Idaho and still looking pretty darn good. Although, because of the heat, the dogs and I haven’t put many miles on in chukar country, we’ve still got some road miles in. My camera’s broke again, so you’ll have to take my word on the findings.
The baby quail started showing up over the last two weeks with some big broods. The earlier hatch looked a little more dismal with small broods and I’m still seeing pairs running the road. Hopefully they’ll be having a second hatch.
The huns look to have had a great hatching year. We’re seeing more from the roads than I can recall ever seeing and we’ve had about twenty birds show up around the house. We haven’t seen a hun hear for the past four or five years. I’m hoping Grady don’t find them or I won’t be able to keep him home.
I had two good reports on chukars. They were reports from chukar hunters that also like fishing. One was from the Owyhee reservoir where there were lot’s of little ones scampering along the water edge. The second was from a Hell’s canyon sturgeon fisherman who said he didn’t see tons of birds because of the thick cover but heard lot’s of talk from them and saw quick glimps of young chukars running between the brush.
The grouse season starts 16 days earlier than chukars but I can’t give much of a report on them. On the few trips up into the high country, I’ve seen some adult birds but have yet seen any young ones. I can’t imagine it being bad because I’m suddenly seeing a lot of turkey chicks. With all the other birds doing well, I think the grouse should have done well also.
I’m getting a new camera around the first and when the morning temperatures get down to at least fifty the boys and I will be looking for some chukars to film. Hopefully we’ll get some good footage to help keep you excited for the upcoming season.
Keep your fingers crossed that these dry mountains don’t catch fire. I believe that is the only thing that can impact this season now.
How is the bod tough guy, you are my inspiration. Give us news champ. I’m 73

Thanks for asking. My leg is pretty much healed and my back is feeling somewhat better. I think from here it’s just a matter of getting back into chukar shape which means a lot of hill walking. I’m your age so you know how hard it is to get back into the steep hill routine. I got a new problem. I think Grady blew a knee yesterday. I’m praying not but can’t see a vet until Monday. Jake with his diabetes has slowed down considerably and will only be able to make short hunts. He is almost 11 now, so I don’t expect much from him but will always take him along as long as he can manage it. He’s been a great friend and chukar dog. No matter what, we will be able to salvage some of the season but I hate seeing one of my buddies uncomfartable.

Well that hurts to hear on your dog, this kind of stuff , is always around the corner . Thankfully he’s got a good place to rest and be looked after when you head out.
Tell me how you figured out he had diabetes ??

Jake started peeing and drinking all the time. We had to let him out at least a half dozen times every night. We also noticed some disorientation at times. With two shots every day we’ve seemed to have it under control but we have had to stop snacks which he doesn’t understand. He doesn’t range like he use to but still likes to go.

Mine drinks tons , but have not noticed abnormal urination. In regards to your ortho problem. Try as you can to see Dr. Calhoun in nampa . Idaho vet clinic . He’s top tier , not easy to get to see. Good luck with that
