A reminder

Thanks for all of the prayers and kind thoughts. I’m still smarting some but at least I have good thoughts of being on the hill in the fairly near future.

Vivian Chan brought a thought to me about emergency beacons. They don’t do you much good if you don’t have them close enough to get to them. I hunt alone 90 % of the time so Barb got me an inreach a couple of years ago. I still don’t know how to use it to the fullest potential but I understand how to push the sos button. But I can’t do that if I can’t get to it.

I have the unit attached to my hunting vest which was in the bed of my sxs. Of course the vest got tossed down the hill quite a ways. Being trapped it was doing me no good down the hill. I could have kept the vest inside with me or even had the inreach hooked to a belt loop. That way I could have used it for what it’s purpose is. I had thought about that while I was trapped and definitely would have been using it had I not had phone reception and it was close by.

Just food for thought.

Hunting has been a favorite past time for me for 55 years but the last twenty five years I have been consumed by chukar hunting and more specifically chukar hunting with fantastic dogs. In this blog I hope to pass on any information I can about chukar hunting but more than anything I want to showcase what will probably be my last two chukar dogs, Jake and Grady. I am 70 years old, Jake is 8 and Grady is 3 and I'm hoping to stay on the chukar mountain until I am 80 when Grady will be fetching my final chukars.

  1. Good reminder Larry. I have my Inreach in my back pouch of my bird vest, along with some forceps, a dog pack out vest, etc . Not the handiest I guess.
I hate dangling things on cords though. Headed down on Sat for a week. Hope your recovery is going well and I trust you will be out there as soon as possible.

  2. It’s easy to set up Inreach . I have a beacon that is sent to my wife and daughter every 10 minutes. If they see 17 in one spot, that’s where the body is. This way my family can track where I am all the time. It allows me to hunt by myself. Learn how to use your Inreach is a wonderful tool. Be sure to turn it off before you go to the bar…..

  3. For some reason it’s showing me as anonymous. If you want help setting up your Inreach you can contact me at (208) 971-0653, Chris Preston or better yet call Garmin and they will walk you through it. It’s really wonderful technology, I have used it in South America, Africa, and messages take no more than a minute to get through.

  5. Larry, I’m so sorry to read about your mishap, but very glad for your out come and pray for a full recovery! Cliff Rexrode and I are here in Idaho hunting birds now. I use an Epirb personal beacon that is registered with NOAA and monitored by the US Coastguard. It’s mainly for fisherman but I use it for hunting and work also (I’m a forester and sometimes work in remote areas). There isn’t a subscription fee, which I like. NOAA requires re-registration every two years. There are several different manufacturers of these devices. Ron
