Snow day

After a few days of sitting around waiting out the bad weather, we got a blue bird day to hit the mountain. Jake, Grady and I had a fun time seeing what was on the hill. We did find a few small covey’s but for the most part we found paired birds aand plenty of them. Since there is no gun season I packed the camera and got some fun stuff. Fun for me anyhow. You’ll just have to pretend it’s you and your mutts in order to feel it.

I got plenty of footage but only two to show right now. The rest will take a lot of editing to cut out all the stumbling and heavy breathing.

You’ve probably heard the old joke about the old bull and the young bull looking down the hill at all the cows below. This first video is of the old dog, Jake and the young dog, Grady. The first part is Jake moving up the hill patiently while Grady is running all over the place. With all of Grady’s running, they both arrived at the same place to hold down some birds.

This second video is a continuation of the same point and show some dogs cheating. As I approached the birds, Jake broke and hustled up to where he had scent. He’s learning at his old age that he needs to get close or he’ll miss out on the action. Grady didn’t break at first but after a few birds flushed from up above he swung around the rocks and got the remaining bird between him and Jake.

It’s fun being on the mountain, no matter what shape we are in. I’ll have more video’s as time goes by. If you need explanations on the video’s comment and I’ll try to explain what me and the dogs are doing and if you like the video’s, post like and I’ll try and keep them coming. I have a lot of fun doing them.

Hunting has been a favorite past time for me for 55 years but the last twenty five years I have been consumed by chukar hunting and more specifically chukar hunting with fantastic dogs. In this blog I hope to pass on any information I can about chukar hunting but more than anything I want to showcase what will probably be my last two chukar dogs, Jake and Grady. I am 70 years old, Jake is 8 and Grady is 3 and I'm hoping to stay on the chukar mountain until I am 80 when Grady will be fetching my final chukars.

  1. Wayne, it was a good bit of snow for Mar. 6. We got 14 inches of fresh snow at 5000 feet. But the southern slopes I was on yesterday were melted off already today. A fun snow.
