Well, another season is about to start. Idaho upland birds (chukar, huns and quail) open the day after tomorrow. We lost a lot of hunting area to fires this year but there is still more than enough left to chase our favorite birds. And, wow! are there ever a lot out there. Late scouting revealed great numbers almost everywhere we ventured to.
The weather will be decent for the opener but we still have to be vigilant about keeping our canine buddies out to long and carrying plenty of water. We have a very graciously long season and no sense in hurting our buddies that work so hard for us. I know I’ll keep my hunts to early morning hunts and be off the hill before the temperatures get too high.
As usual, I’m going to start my season with two shells loaded with ashes from my past hunting dogs along with some #7 1/2 shot in hopes that at the report of my over and under a chukar might fall to the ground. Whether they hit the mark or not, I’ll spend a moment reliving hunts with those fine dogs and thanking God for those great times. From there I’ll just pray for one more season of excitement with Jake and Grady on the mountain. Jake won’t make many trips this year at the age of 12 with his failing hips, diabetes and deftness, but I’m going to cherish each and every point and retrieve by him.

Good luck to everyone, be safe and come home with some great memories.
know that you will be cherishing every day out with the dogs. And it sounds like a terrific season ahead. Up here the hun hunts have been good but the heat makes it only a morning hunt
