Wow! It sounds like I’m going to be eating crow. I figured I knew everything there is about chukars. Obviously, I don’t know much. I heard from a very reliable source that there are a lot of young chukar chicks out there. I still haven’t seen one and have to admit I’ve seen very few before this date in the past twenty years.
Maybe I spend too much time hiking and not enough time on the roads because they are seeing them on the roads. And I’d bet my house on what Conner says is true. There goes my theory about most chukars not even being hatched yet. I’ve always believed that about now is when the main chukar hatch really starts.
I even read in another upland site about people seeing them, but I was leery of believing, but now I have to eat crow. But even though crow must taste like crap, it’s not all that bad. I’m tickled to hear about strong numbers.
I’m also hearing the same news about quail. Once again, it’s hard for me to understand. Just yesterday, I took a 7-mile ride up past my house, where there are a lot of quail. I counted 27 single male quail on the road and four paired quail. No sign of a little one. But the news I got today makes me a believer that I don’t know a thing, and they are out there.
But there is good news out there. First off, is that I am full of sh___. Secondly, it looks like the hatch is on, and it’s looking good. And thirdly, we had a nice drizzle of rain over southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon that is going to help the chicks survive the long, hot summer.
So I’ll still try to pass on what I see on my scoutings, but don’t trust the b.s. About how much I know about chukars.
