What a difference a little weather makes. It wasn’t long ago I was complaining about the lack of chukars. It was dry and hot, and the dogs and I weren’t finding chukars. We had the longest dry spell of finding chukars in over 40 years. Suddenly, the rains came and the temperatures dropped. Chukar hunting became quite fun for both the dogs and me.
We went to another spot today, and we were quite pleased. I didn’t count coveys or take pictures, but there were several coveys and plenty of opportunities to take pictures. My collars were working today and I was concentrating on Layne who has recently decided to reach out a ways. It was all good. She had a point at 350 yards and held it until I got there and flushed the birds. That’s a little farther than I like because of the steep country, but today we were in more mellow spot.
By the end of the day, Layne had actually pointed more birds than Grady. I was a pleased chukar hunter. I didn’t take time to take pictures except for the tailgate photo. I have to show Layne’s first all chukar limit. Of course it was with the help of Grady. She really proved to me today that I can trust her on birds. She’ll be nine months old in six days. Pretty cool.
My big excitement was when I came upon both dogs on point, looking directly at each other. They were both so intense, I figured there had to be a bird. There wasn’t and I had to almost pry them from their poses to get them back to hunting. They were just honoring each other.

It’s sure fun to be finding chukars again.
